the coconut within the tide

This is a series of pictures taken in 1996 in Bali.
During the sojourn there, the negatives were lost.
Due to having sent the entire series of photographs as postcards to a friend in Salzburg, we are able to view the pictures. The prints were not touched up.
“The coconut within the tide” was also the title of a self-published catalogue in 2001. Here’s the story:
I dreamt of a tropical storm. Branches, leaves, froth, gusts of wind were pitted against me, making my way torturous. I summoned up all my strength in the face of the odds. The palm trees were swaying when suddenly, unexpectedly, slowly among the din, a coconut became loose, falling, falling, driven and guided by the storm – on my head. And I was dead. I woke up from this dream, screaming. On a day, when the moon was full, at the height of the push and pull of the tide, I stood on the beach at Thanaloth, Bali, in order to watch the sundown. I stood there silently, and impressed by the grand spectacle of colors, pushed back by the demanding force of the waves. Then I saw it – the coconut from my dream. The waves brought it to me, directly to me, for a mere instant, after which it was washed away by the tide, returning briefly, prior to being drawn far away. The coconut – the waves broke over it, enveloping it, bringing it to me, thereafter taking it away again, from the safety of the shore to the distance, where the ocean absorbed it.
