the stars of hatshepsut

Thomas Rucker has dedicated this series of oil paintings to the mythical Egyptian queen/pharaoh Hatshepsut, and her stars. It may have been like “reaching for the stars”, when Hatshepsut ascended the pharaoh’s throne – a position claimed exclusively by men back then.
The broad range of Rucker’s means of expression is particularly conspicuous in this exhibit. The scope encompasses realistic-figurative depictions, reduced and dissolved forms. The structure of this exhibit emphasizes the afore-described path from realism to abstraction: the beholder is led from expressive, figurative images to sensuously painted, abstract explosions of color. Starfish are transformed into stars and reflections of light.
The color indigo plays an important part: several paintings contain this shade of blue. It also ties in with the theme of the exhibit: indigo was frequently used for mural painting in ancient Egypt.
In “The Stars of Hatshepsut”, Rucker also experiments with a variety of materials, such as sand, cellulose, pine needles, bamboo leaves and chalk. A combination of partly realistic and partly abstracting oil painting results in paintings featuring integrated collage elements. The three-dimensional character of these paintings creates a liveliness that has an elemental effect, thanks to the materials applied. The color scheme of the oil paints has an amazingly light appearance, frequently having a transparent effect.
